Do you think of yourself as a different person than who you are in your memories?

If our memories make us who we are, does Hell-enforced amnesia turn you into someone else?

If memories make us who we are, then doesn't making new memories here make us new people anyway?

In my case, I wouldn't say that's true at all. Certainly it's given me cause to reconsider some things with a fresh perspective, but I would say I have a fairly strong personality and personal principles that have not changed.

same person, just that I'm learning new things about myself

(Anonymous) 2020-12-17 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
that's way too complicated of a question to answer here

(Anonymous) 2020-12-17 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I am definitely the same person as before. But I would say I am learning from my time here and gaining different perspectives.

Not if someone is periodically purchasing their past memories.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-17 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it'd be wrong of me to say that I'm a different person, since my experiences are still my own, and the things I did before were with the same hands, but I'm choosing to be different than I was.

This is begging the question of Nature vs Nurture and, quite frankly, there are plenty of indications that a person is Just Like This and even without memories, they will still fall into some behavioral patterns because here is the thing you're failing to consider:

Not having memories does not change how your brain has grown to be wired, nor does it change any chemical imbalances you may have bodily. If you were fucked up with memories, chances are you are likely to still be fucked up without them.

But the truly terrible thing is that you'll be fucked up and not know WHY.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-17 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
HONESTLY. That's the second-worst part.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-17 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
At least with memories you can point to some random experience and claim "that's why I'm like this".

Here, all you have is "we're in Hell". What a joke!

(Anonymous) 2020-12-17 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Remembering was worse.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-17 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
No arguments here! There's a reason I didn't say which was better or worse. People have disagreements on this point.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-17 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good question.

It's hard to say when you don't remember very much about yourself. But so far, everything seems much the same for me.
